Children and Contacts Health Concerns

When children have contacts, they at times can be irresponsible. In a recent study done on emergency rooms, it was discovered that 23 percent of medical emergencies that involved medical devices involved contact lenses.

There were no specifics as to what the actual details were. However, this only leads to speculation that proper eye care and proper use, cleaning and disposal of contact lenses can only reduce the number of emergency room visits by children.

Many times the kids think they know better about themselves, but end up causing more harm than good. Make sure to review with your children what they should eb doing and that they are doing it every day.

Computer Vision Syndrome & Affects on Eye Health

As we become more and more reliable on our computers, cell phones and other electronic devices to be able to communicate and conduct business, we are realizing that we are becoming more of a squinting nation. In other words we are damaging our vision since we are being forced to view things in nontraditional ways and thus causing more problems than are truly necessary to us.

There are ways to set up your workstation so as to avoid dealing with this and to minimize the effects and you need to determine how it will work best for you in order to maintain healthy vision.

Watch Out For Green Lasers - Eye Health

Green laser pointers as many would think would not cause as much damage to the retina as a red laser.

However, as has been learned through recent research that is just not the case. The problem itself is not with the green light that these laser pointers emit, it is with the invisible light that is produced which will cause damage to the retinas. It is not necessarily that the lights are too bright, but that the manufacturing process of many of these green laser pointers is inadequate and does not have enough of a filter to keep the invisible light at a safe level.

Hints For Kids Glasses

Take into consideration these things when you are trying to get new glasses for your children. Depending on the prescription, the glasses may need to be really thick. If this is the case, you will want to get smaller frames in order to have smaller and lighter lenses.

Consider your child’s feelings as well. You will want to make sure that they glasses they get will make them feel comfortable, not only on their face, but also in style as well. You will want to offer suggestions such as photochromic lenses or other features that may entice your child.

Other things to consider are the bridge and the temple style. The bridge of a child’s nose is not fully developed which may make it difficult to find the right glasses that will not slide off.

You also want to look at the temples on the frames, as they may be too tight or loose depending on the size of the child’s head.

It Is All About Men's Eyeglasses and Frames

For many men, the need for eyeglasses is not something they desire. However, the fact that they do need them does not make them any less important and any less of a fashion statement.

Men want to make sure that they get the kind of frames they are comfortable with and will want to wear. This means that they will need to look at a number of different options and compare and contrast the styles from horn rimmed to rimless as well as all of the other main styles of frames.

The materials that make up the glasses are important as well when you are trying to decide which ones you will buy. Do you want something that is feather light or something that is heavy. You also need to look at things such as nose pads and bridges.

You will also need to consider which material for the lenses as well as the coatings for the lenses. Once these are all factored in, then you can make a decision about your glasses and how you will look for the near future.

Is LASIK Eye Surgery A Good Option For You?

LASIK eye surgery is a good option for many people. In this type of procedure, the shape of the eye is improved which improves your overall vision. For many people, it has allowed for improvements to 20/20 vision. In fact, the American Academy of Ophthalmology states that as many as 90 percent of patients do reach that 20/20 level of quality after having LASIKS performed.
Keeping this in mind, it is also important to note that there can be other problems associated with the eye's health that LASIK does not address and can worsen. For example, many people who had dry eye symptoms prior to the procedure have increased symptoms afterwards. Other problems that some people face include shadows, halos, difficulty seeing at night, reduced contrast in their vision and glare.
Most people who have LASIK do state they are happy with the improvement to their vision. However, before you consider having this procedure done, do talk to your local New York optometrist about the risk factors associated with it and then make an educated decision if it is for you.

When Does Your Child Need an Eye Exam?

Most often, as a child develops, his or her eyes will change. In most cases, a child that visits his or her pediatrician routinely will not need a specialized eye exam from an optometrist. However, your child needs to have a doctor's exam of their vision done at least one time per year, most often it is best to do this every six months.

You do need to get a full eye exam from an New York optometrist if your family doctor says it is necessary and also do so prior to the child entering school. This exam is more thorough and will provide for a better understanding of the eye's health. Further, if your child will be in need of glasses, you can have the child adjusted to them before school starts.

Also, keep in mind that children who spend a great deal of time outdoors, or any time in bright sunlight, should be wearing UV protection. Take the time to protect your child's eyes to ensure their long term health.

At our New York eye doctors office in Vestal, we carry many unique frames that cannot be found anywhere close to home such as Grant (made in Italy) and Elce (made in France) to name a few. Make an appointment today or call 607-754-8670!

Selecting Appropriate Sunglasses & Eyewear for the Summer

Purchasing sunglasses for the summer months should be a lot of fun, rather than a chore. Many people, though, struggle with the process. Which shape frame should I buy? Do I want big sunglasses or smaller ones? Should I get UV protective lenses or not? The investment in a pair of sunglasses should be as significant as purchasing a pair of shoes. You need them to be comfortable, protective, stylish and affordable.

There are three things to remember when it comes to buying the right sunglasses for this summer’s outdoor excursions:

#1: Invest in Protection

Any sunglasses you do purchase need to protect your eyes from the ultraviolet rays from the sun. The UV lenses you purchase should protect your eyes from the sun by 95 to 100 percent. In other words, they should block out as much of the UV light as possible. This protects your eyes, which most eye doctors will tell you is one of the most sensitive areas of the body when it comes to UV exposure. In addition, consider polarized lenses. These help provide you with another layer of protection, specifically against glaring sunlight that bounces off surfaces that are wet or otherwise reflective.

#2: Go Stylish

You could choose practical sunglasses to wear this summer. You would save a good amount of money and you most likely will find yourself looking at what works rather than how you look in them. However, there are two things to remember. First, you will find stylish lenses within your budget, including off brand and brand name eyewear. Second, you will find comfortable lenses that are stylish, too.

For this season, check out the big frames that help to exemplify the look of your face, drawing people to your eyes. Choose darker lenses rather than lighter ones. However, color is always a big player in the role of sunglasses. Do not be afraid to pick up a pair of sunglasses that scream color!

#3: Comfort and Budget Matter

Finally, find summer sunglasses within your budget. A wide range of products are now on the market that are less expensive, but still have those impressive features you are looking for. Further, you may want to consider some of the budget frames and lenses available through new brands just hitting the market’s shelves. These are trendy and fun, but at the same time they are highly fashionable.

Comfort is not something you have to give up. Designers are paying more attention to comfort now than ever before. They are also looking for products that fit the face better without giving too much attention to bulk or being too heavy to wear comfortably.

The good news is that you will find a wide range of choices on the market that fit all of these specific areas. Comfort is something that you can focus on while still getting affordable and trendy looks that protect your eyes from the sun’s harsh rays. Yes, you can have it all in today’s sunglasses for the summer months.

Computer Eye Strain Stops Users In Tracks

According to some studies, as many as half of all computer users will experience some type of headache, blurred vision or even eyestrain from using their computer for a sustained amount of time on a regular basis. There has also been the establishment of heavy computer use and the risk of developing glaucoma.

Eye care needs to be a focal point of your daily use of the computer. The glare, poor lighting conditions, screen flicker rate and other factors all cause visual stress, which can lead to pain, discomfort and in some cases, poor eye health.

To avoid these problems, brush up on some eye care tips, including using eye exercises such as palming which allows you to cover one of your eyes with your hand until your eyes see nothing but blackness. Home eye care such as head rolls and even hydrotherapy, where a bowl of steaming water is placed in front of you to allow the effects of the steam to relax your eyes, can also be helpful. Use a wash cloth from that hot water placed over your eyes, without allowing them to touch the eyes. Doing this can ease eye strain and improve your eye care.

Designer but Retro Sunglasses in for 2010

Eyeglasses for the 2010 season are likely to be more retro then new and trendy. While new styles will be available everywhere, you can count on seeing some of the retro styles coming back in full force. Both prescription and sunglasses will have that look from the 1920’s through the 1970’s, depending on which brand you decide to invest in. The good news is that you will have plenty of options that will keep you stylish this year.

Here are some features to look for in the best that the 2010 eyeglass year will have to offer to you.
  • Colors will include bright and stylish red colors. Green will also be a big player in this year’s eyeglass lines. You will even see some metallic in place as you shop for the latest looks. Do not be afraid of color. Black is not the best option this year.
  • Do look for wrap around lenses. This is a big trend this year and it is one that you can count on staying for some time. Designers and off shoots are creating new sunglasses that do put a lot of focus on this wrap around look. However, they are not all about style. Most are still highly stylish and comfort all the same.
  • The professional look is in. Think of that librarian look. That is the type of look the eyeglasses will take on this year. In particular, you will find a wide range of these “bookish” styles becoming the modern trend. Not only do they give that sexy allure to them, but these sunglasses also provide a higher sense of professionalism. In a time where showing that you are the best for the job is the focal point, it is now more important than ever to choose a professional looking pair of glasses.
  • UV protection is in. One thing that is still very important to today’s eyeglass wearer is their eye’s health. In short, you need a pair of sunglasses that are highly protective of your eyes against ultraviolet light. However, more designer brands, as well as off brands, are now incorporating UV protection in the lenses they offer.
  • Trends in men’s eyewear for 2010 will include the 1950’s movie look. This includes those large frames that surround darker lenses. Even black and brown sunglasses will be a popular option. Focus on those sunglasses and eyeglasses that have you looking professional and sexy at the same time.
When it comes down to it, the retro look will play a role in eyewear going forward. This includes eyewear from new designers, but with a focus on looks from the 50’s and even before. You will find that many of the new styles incorporate protective elements for your eyes. This includes both eyewear options such as prescription glasses as well as sunglasses for both men and women. Choose looks that you love since loving your look is going to be an important role player when it comes to style trends for the 2010 season.

How to Choose Kids Eyewear, Glasses & Sunglasses

Once your local eye doctor has told you that your son or daughter needs glasses, your heart may sink just a bit. Not only are glasses expensive, but kids do not like to wear them. Further, if you imagine the activities your child takes part in on a daily basis, you may also realize that eyewear is going to need to be durable. How can you choose the right options for your children?

The good news is that kids eyewear has come a long way in the last five or so years. Now, new products and even special offers make it easier to affordable, maintain and use eyewear. Still, there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing these products.
  1. Choose kids eyewear that is practical. Beyond anything else, kids will need eyewear that is easy for them to use and highly effective at improving their sight. If you choose designer frames or lenses but these are not usable on a regular basis, your child is not getting the most out of them.
  2. Look for scratch resistance and bending frames. It may sound strange, but some of today’s top manufacturers in kids frames are creating products that bend and turn easily and bounce back to their original shape. Imagine your child falling. While they may have scraped their knee, their glasses will simply bend back into the right shape.
  3. Consider kids eyewear that is backed by a warranty. Many manufacturers and distributors will provide a warranty on the lenses and the frames. This means that if the lens is scratched or the frame does break, you can come in to the office and get a replacement. Further, small things like the lenses popping out, can easily be replaced.
  4. Allow your child to take part in the process of choosing their eye wear. This will encourage them to be part of the process which in turn will encourage them to wear their glasses more readily. For example, you might allow them to choose the shape of the lens and the color of the frames.
  5. Do look for UV protection in glasses. Most providers now offer this product, especially for kids who are playing outdoors a lot. UV protection glasses block harmful UV rays from damaging the eyes, a growing problem today.
  6. Do look for specialized products, including sports eyewear. These products are designed to be highly durable and to remain in position when your child is playing sports. Wrap around frames, for example, allow your child to have marked improvement in their vision while participating in sports.
All it takes is a bit of research and time to find the right frames and lenses for your children. Kids eyewear is never an easy process, but once you incorporate these tips into the process of selecting frames and lenses, it will be easier. Keep in mind that there are both off brand and brand name glasses out there for your children. You will also find numerous styles, colors, shapes and various options for every budget available.

At our New York eye doctors office in Endicott, we carry many unique frames that cannot be found anywhere close to home such as Grant (made in Italy) and Elce (made in France) to name a few. Make an appointment today or call 607-754-8670!

Are Home Remedies a Good Option for Eye Care?

Home remedies may or may not be a good way to care for your eyes. Before you use any type of home remedy, it is incredibly important for you to learn what is in it and why it is effective at the specific need you have. However, there is some great news for those who are looking for ways to prevent eye disease or vision problems. All natural treatments and preventative remedies can be highly effective.

To maintain proper eye care, three simple things you can do will keep the doctor away:
  1. Eat an antioxidant rich diet. This means a lot of fruit and vegetables of various colors. The key is that antioxidants found within these vitamin rich foods will help your eyes to remain healthy. Even if you do experience infections, for example, with the right diet, you will see improved overall health.
  2. Avoid sunlight directly on the eyes. You may use skin lotions for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, but are you using eyewear that will also prevent your eyes from being attacked by the sun? You should always wear sunglasses with UV protection while in direct sunlight.
  3. Avoid smoking. The ingredients in cigarettes and other similar products will affect your eye health. More so, it can lead to sagging and baggy looking skin around the eyes.

Natural Remedies for Eye Health

Natural solutions are available to help promote healthy vision and they can improve the long term health of your eyes. You will find quality products that can provide you with some improvements to conditions you already have, too. Both herbal and homeopathic methods and remedies are available to help you in this way. However, in order for them to work well, they need to come from a reputable company specializing in herbal products.

One example of how simple herbs can improve your eye health is the product bilberry, or Vaccinium myrtillus. This herb has the ability to strengthen eye capillaries. This can help to fight off infection while also helping to prevent other eye related disease.

Rooibos, or Aspalathus linearis is another option. These are antioxidants that are known to provide improvement to the eyes by supplying the eyes with a healthy, oxygen rich supply of blood and essential nutrients. Free radicals, which are elements within your body that lead to disease and complications, are flushed away with this antioxidant.

Of course, you have heard that carrots are good for eyesight. The good news is that this is one of the simplest and most effective treatments out there. Because of the beta carotene in them, carrots provide your eyes with one of the most important vitamins for them. All you have to do is to eat them to get these results.

As you can see, there are numerous methods available that will help you to improve your overall eye health. Do not over the use of medications or treatments prescribed by your eye doctor, but do consider some alternative treatments as well.

5 Tips for Great Eye Care and Eye Health

Taking care of your eyes is a critical step that most people avoid. If you do not think about your eyes unless they are bothering you, you could find yourself facing infections, a decrease in overall eye beauty and even a restriction on your eyesight. The good news is that taking care of your eyes is not hard to do. With a few basic tips, you could find yourself with very healthy eyes that are able to resist illness.

Consider the following five tips to caring for your eyes. While not all-inclusive, this list is a great place to get started in caring for your eyes.
  1. Washing your eyes is an important step. The fact is, if you wash your eyes the same as you do your face, you may not be giving them enough attention. Rather, focus on choosing eye care methods for the type of skin you have. You also want to focus on using cold, running water to rinse your eyes. By splashing this cool water into your eyes, you do not shock them. The running water helps to flush the eyes.
  2. Remove makeup on a daily basis and between applications. Makeup can get into the eyes and over time can lead to difficulties with vision or infections. Also, store all makeup items in a clean, dry location to avoid any build up of bacteria on them. Use proper makeup removers to ensure all makeup is removed safely.
  3. Choose all natural make up products and removers whenever it is possible to do so. Look for those based with natural ingredients. For makeup removers, consider using extra virgin olive oil on a pad. You can add rosemary oil to it. You can also find other oils such as extra virgin coconut oil and jojoba oil.
  4. Update your prescription eyeglass needs. Investing in a pair of prescription glasses is critical for anyone that needs them. Not only do these prescriptions actually provide you with improved vision, but they also reduce the risks of eye strain. However, if you do not have an updated prescription, that could lead to further complications.
  5. Eat a nutrient rich diet and take a multivitamin. These are the simplest of methods to improving your overall eye health and well being. The fact is, without this type of attention to your eyes, you could be risking degenerative conditions. A nutrient rich diet can actually improve your vision and eye health and prevent complications down the road. Eating vitamins, nutrient rich proteins and healthy fats are all an important step in maintaining eye health.
Take the time to consider your eye health. Have you invested enough time in ensuring that your eyes are healthy? If not, now may be one of the best times to do so. These five tips will start you on the process of improving your eye health overall. Best of all, these are all easy to do and take very little time to accomplish on a regular basis.

You owe it to your eyes to call us today at 607-754-8670 and set up an appointment for an eye exam with a New York optometrist at Eye Contact by Kathy.

Technology Has Improved Eyewear Choices

If you look at eyewear from just ten to twenty years ago (and farther back) you are likely to notice a few things. First, the lenses themselves are heavy and they often leave red marks on the high check as a result of wearing them all day. The frames are larger and thicker, which is necessary to hold the actual lenses in place. And, you might notice that the frames have a full rim, often the same color as the frame, giving the lenses a very strong appearance on the face.

Things have changed. They have changed in many ways, in fact. Look at a few of the changes that continue to happen in eyewear today to improve the overall look and feel of eyewear in general.

  • Technology has excelled when it comes to the weight of lenses. In fact, you can expect not to feel these lenses at all on your face.
  • The weight reduction in lenses is one thing, but the fact that they are now thinner than ever is incredibly important. This allows you to have thinner frames, which means more style options for many people.
  • With that thinner frame, you can now choose from a wider range of types of frames, including everything from metal to plastics.
  • Some of today’s best eyewear choices even include a rimless look or a semi rimless look. This means that at least half of the lens does not have a rim around it. Rather, there is an embedded plastic string like attachment to keep it in place.
  • Lenses can be tinted now, too. A few years ago, if you wore glasses you simply could not wear sunglasses since you could not get prescription sunglasses. Today, this is no longer a problem. In fact, some lenses even transition to sunglasses when you enter bright light automatically.

Technology really continues to add to the world of eyewear. Today, people who have stronger prescriptions or unique eye problems can find stylish sunglasses and eyewear to use without it looking out of the normal range. For those who have uneven eyes in prescriptions, this is a very helpful benefit to the overall look.

Even better, these technology upgrades are not specific to certain brands, either. In fact, many of today’s top designer names now offering sunglasses and prescription glasses that look great and function well in a wide range of methods. Keep in mind that you do not have to purchase expensive frames to have the look you are after, either. In fact, even designer products can be affordable to purchase.

However, when it comes to buying any of these eyewear options, always talk to your eye doctor first to ensure that the product is right for your unique eye condition. You also want to ensure that the product you choose is well made and offers the style that you like so that they are long lasting and provide you with look you want to have. With so many options available, you are sure to find numerous options to choose from.

Madonna and Dolce and Gabbana Team Up for Eyewear

In the name of fashion, pop icon Madonna is teaming up with the style duo of Dolce and Gabbana to create a line of fashion sunglasses. This will be the first time that the Italian fashion designers will be teaming up with anyone for a cobranded product, as these glasses will be. The Dolce and Gabbana line of clothing, eyewear and other accessories is popular for its couture fashion style.

The new eyewear line will be called MDG. It will be part of a larger line of the MG Icon. MG Icon is a joint venture between Madonna, Iconix Brand Group Inc and the pop star’s manager Guy Oseary.

Madonna is not new to the fashion world. Just a few weeks ago the artist announced a new line of teen clothing, that will be promoted by both Madonna and her daughter. It will be found in some 200 stores and online in August, through the Macy’s line and other retailers.

The new sunglass line will cost between $248 and $289 and they will be manufactured by Luxottica. The sunglasses should make their first appearance in May 2010.

Fashion Eyewear Trends

Will you buy into the new line of Madonna eyewear? No matter if you do or you do not, there are a few things that you should keep in mind when it comes to shopping for eyewear that hits that high fashion mark. Consider these tips to help you with your choices.

  • While buying a designer brand may be important to you, be sure that the size of the glasses fit your face. Glasses that are too large or too small will not do anything to improve your style sense.
  • Do shop around. While you may feel the best way to get this designer name brand or another is to shop at big name retailers, you can often find these and other designer products available for less through online outlets. Be sure to check them out, too.
  • Focus on what you love. You may like this particular style of sunglass but do you love it? If you are not sure about that, take a step back and consider the options that you have. Dolce and Gabbana, for example, offer other products that could be more in line with your tastes.
  • Do look at the shape of the eyewear, too. It is important for each individual to choose a shape that works with the shape of his or her face. Try making the eyeglass shape with the shape of your face, too.

These tips can help you to find the right type of sunglasses or other eyewear for your needs. Remember that anyone can find a quality product by just buying a designer name, like these sunglasses will be, but that does not mean they are buying a product that is right for their particular needs. You should want to look good as well as wear the latest and greatest styles in sunglasses and eyewear products.

Rimless and Semi Rimmed Eyewear & Eye Glasses

One of the latest fashion statements in eyewear is to choose a rimless or semi rimmed frame. As the name implies, these eyeglasses have a design to remove at least part of the frame that goes around the lens. When there is less rim present, the glasses blend in better with your face and do not attract attention when you wear them. You can look more like you without glasses when you choose this particular style of frame. However, not all products are the same.

Are Rims In?

Rimless eyewear features lenses that are attached to a frame that is barely there. Most are quite secure and well built, but they are either opaque in color, see through, or more commonly, the frame is small and virtually unnoticeable. Some have nothing more than the side frames, nose guards and a top frame at the top edge of the glasses that is thin.

The rimless look is becoming popular. In fact, they are one of the stylish trends of today. If you are considering your options when it comes to designer eyewear, you may see more options that have this rimless look. What is nice about this look is that the glasses do not take away from the overall look because they fade into the face easily. Further, because the frames are less noticeable, they become less of a factor when it comes to matching them against outfits, style trends or even just becoming tired of the same look.

Women also find this rimless look to be appealing because it allows the makeup colors they use to come through stronger. Rather than having a large, bulky frame that draws the attention in, they can tailor their look by the color and types of makeup they use. That can be an ideal choice for anyone who is looking for a way to improve their eyesight without using bulky frames to do so.

Semi Rimless Eyewear Works Too!

On the other hand, some people want more stability and durability from the eyewear they select. The good news is that this is easily obtained with a semi rimless frame. As the name implies, this look has a half rim or frame that covers the top portion of the eyewear. This provides the lenses with a better way of staying in place. However, the bottom portion of the lens is free from a frame piece. Rather, a thin plastic or wire strip that is unnoticeable is used to hold the lenses in place.

When it comes to buying any type of rimless or semi rimless style of eyewear, keep in mind that you want to buy high quality products. If you fail to do this, you could be taking the eyewear in for repair on a regular basis, which is not something you want to do. Nevertheless, this is one of today’s most popular options especially for those who are a bit self-conscious about wearing eyewear in the first place. Check out some of the designer options currently available to get an idea of what your options are.
