How to Choose Kids Eyewear, Glasses & Sunglasses

Once your local eye doctor has told you that your son or daughter needs glasses, your heart may sink just a bit. Not only are glasses expensive, but kids do not like to wear them. Further, if you imagine the activities your child takes part in on a daily basis, you may also realize that eyewear is going to need to be durable. How can you choose the right options for your children?

The good news is that kids eyewear has come a long way in the last five or so years. Now, new products and even special offers make it easier to affordable, maintain and use eyewear. Still, there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing these products.
  1. Choose kids eyewear that is practical. Beyond anything else, kids will need eyewear that is easy for them to use and highly effective at improving their sight. If you choose designer frames or lenses but these are not usable on a regular basis, your child is not getting the most out of them.
  2. Look for scratch resistance and bending frames. It may sound strange, but some of today’s top manufacturers in kids frames are creating products that bend and turn easily and bounce back to their original shape. Imagine your child falling. While they may have scraped their knee, their glasses will simply bend back into the right shape.
  3. Consider kids eyewear that is backed by a warranty. Many manufacturers and distributors will provide a warranty on the lenses and the frames. This means that if the lens is scratched or the frame does break, you can come in to the office and get a replacement. Further, small things like the lenses popping out, can easily be replaced.
  4. Allow your child to take part in the process of choosing their eye wear. This will encourage them to be part of the process which in turn will encourage them to wear their glasses more readily. For example, you might allow them to choose the shape of the lens and the color of the frames.
  5. Do look for UV protection in glasses. Most providers now offer this product, especially for kids who are playing outdoors a lot. UV protection glasses block harmful UV rays from damaging the eyes, a growing problem today.
  6. Do look for specialized products, including sports eyewear. These products are designed to be highly durable and to remain in position when your child is playing sports. Wrap around frames, for example, allow your child to have marked improvement in their vision while participating in sports.
All it takes is a bit of research and time to find the right frames and lenses for your children. Kids eyewear is never an easy process, but once you incorporate these tips into the process of selecting frames and lenses, it will be easier. Keep in mind that there are both off brand and brand name glasses out there for your children. You will also find numerous styles, colors, shapes and various options for every budget available.
